Harrisburg, July 3, 2013 – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded a Recycling Performance Grant to Monroeville in Allegheny County, announced state Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland).

The Recycling Performance Grant Program provides communities with incentives to recover more waste through recycling and promotes economic growth by expanding the recycling industry.

“Recycling is one of the easiest ways to take care of our environment,” Brewster said. “It should not be overlooked.”

The grant of more than $18,000 was awarded to the municipality based on its population.

“In 2011, Monroeville recycled more than 3,000 tons of materials,” Brewster said. “I’m pleased Monroeville can use these extra funds to expand its recycling program and recycle even more in the coming years.”

This grant is in addition to the regular funds distributed to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.
