Brewster: New Recycling Grant to Benefit Monroeville

Harrisburg, July 3, 2013 – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded a Recycling Performance Grant to Monroeville in Allegheny County, announced state Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland).

The Recycling Performance Grant Program provides communities with incentives to recover more waste through recycling and promotes economic growth by expanding the recycling industry.

“Recycling is one of the easiest ways to take care of our environment,” Brewster said. “It should not be overlooked.”

The grant of more than $18,000 was awarded to the municipality based on its population.

“In 2011, Monroeville recycled more than 3,000 tons of materials,” Brewster said. “I’m pleased Monroeville can use these extra funds to expand its recycling program and recycle even more in the coming years.”

This grant is in addition to the regular funds distributed to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.

Brewster Announces Grant Opportunity for Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advocacy

Harrisburg, July 3, 2013 – State Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland) announced the Heinz Endowments Summer 2013 Youth Philanthropy Interns will accept applications for a new grant to promote safe walking and biking practices.

In conjunction with Sustainable Pittsburgh and the Local Government Academy, the innovative “Pedals and Pedestrians” grant is an opportunity for municipalities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania to develop safer, more sustainable communities.

“We’re always looking for ways to make our neighborhoods healthier, safer places to live,” Brewster said. “This grant would help create a friendlier, more accessible community for bicyclists and walkers.”

Funding of up to $25,000 will go to municipalities to create a bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy committee. Grants will be awarded to creative, yet feasible, proposals that provide long-term benefits to the community and encourage safe, healthy practices.

“Every year, tens of thousands of pedestrians are injured in road accidents in the United States,” Brewster said. “Local advocacy committees would have to power to change that.”

Additional details about the grant and the application process can be found here. Proposals are due by Aug. 2, 2013. Contact Megan Wall at mwall@heinzinterns.org to submit a proposal or for more information.
