Brewster Encourages Small Business Owners to Apply for DEP Grant
Harrisburg, Sept. 12, 2013 – Pennsylvania small business owners still have a chance to apply for the Department of Environmental Protection’s Small Business Advantage Grant, said state Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland). The deadline to apply for the grant has been extended to Oct. 8.
“This grant encourages small businesses to improve their operations with energy-efficient technology or equipment that helps prevent pollution,” Brewster said. “It will allow businesses in Pennsylvania to invest in their futures while easing the burden on the environment.”
Small businesses that update equipment or procedures to be less harmful to the environment will be eligible to receive up to 50 percent of costs incurred without exceeding $9,500. To be eligible for the grant, the project must be in Pennsylvania, and applicants must show that the project saves the business at least 25 percent plus $500 in energy or pollution costs every year.
A variety of projects are eligible for reimbursement through the grant. Some of the projects include HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting and waste recycling systems.
“Many small business owners want to make these kinds of improvements because they know the upgrades will save them money in the long run,” said Brewster. “Whether it’s to reduce energy consumption or prevent costly pollution, this grant lowers the upfront cost to businesses across Pennsylvania.”
Grants can cover costs expected to be incurred between July 8, 2013 and June 30, 2014.
“I encourage all eligible small business owners to take advantage of the extended deadline and to apply before Oct. 8,” Brewster said.
