Harrisburg, Oct. 19 2011 – The state Senate has unanimously approved Sen. Jim Brewster’s (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland) resolution paying tribute to fallen Lower Burrell Police Officer Derek Kotecki.

Kotecki, 40, was gunned down last week while pursuing a dangerous fugitive. He had served with the Lower Burrell Police Department for 18 years.

“Anyone who knew Derek Kotecki will tell you he was the “best of the best,” and was well respected and admired throughout the Lower Burrell community,” Brewster said in his Senate Floor remarks yesterday.

He also credited Kotecki for helping establish anti-drug programs for children in area schools. Brewster said his resolution honors Officer Kotecki’s life, sacrifice and courage.

“Officer Kotecki answered the call of duty and never wavered,” Brewster said. “He spent a career upholding the highest qualities and principles of being a police officer – and bravely risked his life for the citizens he swore to protect.”

Brewster called on the Senate to “keep Officer Kotecki and his family in your thoughts and prayers.” Following unanimous passage of this resolution, the Senate observed a moment of silent meditation.
