Brewster: McKeesport Awarded Federal Grant That Will Improve Public Housing
Harrisburg, August 1, 2013 – State Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland) announced McKeesport will receive $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to make safety and security improvements at its public housing properties.
“I’m very pleased that McKeesport was selected to receive this competitive grant,” said Brewster, chairman of the McKeesport Housing Authority. “These funds will go a long way in making community members feel safer and more comfortable in their homes.”
The grant will allow McKeesport Housing Authority to fight crime and drug activity by improving lighting, surveillance cameras, fencing and alarm systems. Part of the funding will go toward installing outdoor lighting and purchasing a video security system for the Crawford Village Apartments.
HUD’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program is providing a total of $2.9 million to 15 housing authorities across the country. Ninety housing authorities applied, and McKeesport is the only grant recipient in Pennsylvania.
“There’s nothing more important than being safe and secure,” Brewster said. “I’m thankful McKeesport has the opportunity to make upgrades that will protect its citizens now and in the future.”
