Brewster’s Legislation Honoring Hunters with License Plate Clears Committee
Harrisburg, June 12, 2013 – Hunters may have a new way to show their support for the sport that is a part of many Pennsylvanians’ heritage courtesy of legislation introduced by state Sen. Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland).
Brewster’s measure that would create a Pennsylvania hunting heritage license plate was passed unanimously by the Senate Transportation Committee yesterday. The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
“We’ve completed a major step in the legislative process, and I’ll continue to work to make the new plate a reality,” Brewster said. “Pennsylvania’s hunters deserve their own plate.”
The legislation, Senate Bill 773, would amend Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes to allow the development of a hunting heritage plate. Under the legislation, the Game Commission would work with PennDOT to create a plate design.
The plate would be available for passenger cars, motor homes, trailers, or trucks with a registered gross weight 10,000 pounds or less.
The cost of the plate would be $35, of which, $15 would go to the Pennsylvania Hunting Heritage Fund that distributes harvested wild game to Pennsylvanians through the network of food banks throughout the state. The meat is donated by hunters and municipal herd reduction sources.
“This legislation would allow Pennsylvanians to show their love of hunting while providing funding for a program that helps feed the hungry,” Brewster said. “It makes perfect sense and I am pleased that the measure has now been approved by the Transportation Committee.”
